Common Questions About Walmart Returns

The Full Picture: Walmart Returns

Walmart gives you 90 days to return most items for a full refund. Electronics have a shorter 30-day window, and wireless phones must be returned within 14 days. The experience of actually making a return varies more than at almost any other store. In-store returns are processed at the Customer Service desk, which can range from a 2-minute transaction to a 45-minute ordeal depending on the day, location, and staffing.

Walmart limits no-receipt returns to three per rolling 45-day period per household. On the fourth attempt, you'll be declined regardless of the item or your explanation. This limit resets every 45 days, but you won't be told when you've hit it. You'll just get declined at the register. Managers can sometimes override this, but not always.

Phones must be factory reset before you return them, and Walmart will check. If you return a phone with your data still on it, they should refuse the return. Wipe the phone first.

Major appliances purchased online must be reported as damaged or defective within 48 hours of delivery. If a refrigerator arrives dented and you don't notice until three days later, you've missed the window. Inspect everything immediately when the delivery truck leaves. For large appliances, take a video during the unboxing. It's the best evidence you have if there's a dispute.

Walmart's holiday extension covers purchases from October 1 through December 31, with returns accepted through January 31. That's one of the most generous start dates of any major retailer. But category exceptions still apply, so a phone bought November 1 still has a 14-day window.
