How long does a refund take?
Most credit and debit card refunds post within 3–7 business days from when the retailer processes your return. Gift card and store credit refunds are usually instant. The clock starts when the retailer confirms the return, not when you shipped it back or dropped it off. Weekends don't count.

Does the payment method affect how fast I get my refund?
The merchant processes the refund immediately on their end, but your bank controls how fast the credit posts. Most banks post within 3–5 days but can take up to 7.
Debit refunds can take longer than credit because of how ACH processing works. Your bank may hold funds before releasing them. 5 business days is typical; 10 is the outer limit.
Refunds hit your PayPal or Venmo balance first (usually within 3–5 days), but withdrawing to your bank adds another 1–3 business days.
Store credit and gift card refunds don't go through banking infrastructure. They post immediately or within hours in most cases.
Cash refunds for in-store returns are immediate. Online orders paid in cash typically refund to a gift card or check, which can take 7–14 days.
Why is my refund delayed?
Item not yet received at the return warehouse (for mail returns, allow 7 to 10 business days after the carrier scans it)
Return not inspected yet (some retailers don't process the refund until the item is examined)
High return volume periods (post-holiday January, Prime Day, Black Friday weeks)
Bank processing delays on your end. Contact your bank if the merchant shows the refund as issued
Incorrect refund amount (partial refunds for restocking fees or missing accessories can delay the full processing)
What should I do if my refund has not arrived?
- 1Check your order status online first. Most retailers show "refund issued" with a date
- 2Wait the full stated business day window before escalating (weekends don't count)
- 3Contact the retailer's customer service with your order number and return tracking number
- 4If the retailer confirms refund issued but you don't see it, contact your bank and provide the refund reference number

Do weekends count for refund processing?
No. Business days exclude weekends and federal holidays. A refund issued on Friday won't start processing until Monday. When counting expected days, skip Saturday and Sunday.
Can I speed up my refund?
Not directly. You can't control bank processing times. What you can do: choose gift card or store credit instead of original payment (usually instant), return in-store instead of by mail (eliminates shipping transit time), and make sure your return is fully processed before expecting the timer to start.
